Gavin Patrick Hunter

April 2, 1978 - January 9, 2026

Our beloved son, nephew and friend Gavin Hunter passed away unexpectedly on January 9. He was 47. Gavin left behind his many friends in the hospitality industry as well.  He is survived by his father Jack Davis Hunter III, his sister Amy Joy Russell, his aunt Diane Hunter, his cousin Andrew Hunter and his best friend Cat Resch. His uncle Jody Alvin Hunter, grandparents Jay and Jackie Hunter, and Great Aunt Ruby and Great Uncle Thomas preceded him in death.

He was born in Charleston, SC and was a 1996 graduate of Calvary Day School in Savannah. He was a life-long resident of Savannah where he lived with his grandparents, Jay and Jackie.

During his career, he worked at The Marshall House, Red Lobster and Towa Fusion Restaurant. Hardworking and dependable, he was a favorite of his coworkers and customers alike. His winning way with his customers kept folks coming back to see him.

Gavin was a sweet, caring soul who was always there for his friends and especially his cats. He took care of neighborhood strays, getting them medical care, feeding them and neutering them. The neighbors knew his mission was to keep them safe.

His goofy sense of humor delighted us all. Despite whatever he was going through in his personal life, he always had a smile and an empathetic attitude for all his family and friends.

An inveterate collector, he compiled an amazing collection of vintage video games, comics, beanie babies, movies and tv shows. Popular culture was his thing. He knew every twist and turn of his favorite shows, especially Doctor Who which his aunt introduced him to when he was nine.

He loved to travel and took trips to New York, Arizona, Great Britain and the Caribbean. In Wales, he got to visit the studio where they filmed Dr. Who, a highlight of his fan life. His family loved visiting him and having him show us the best of Savannah.

He had a childlike joy for life, but he worked too hard. His kindness will remain a shining example of how to cultivate true friends.

Donations may be made to the Savannah Humane Society in his honor. There will be a celebration of his life at Towa Fusion Restaurant, 54 Montgomery Crossroads, Savannah at 12:30 p.m., April 18.
